Deel
Also known as: Sceletium tortuosum, kanna, kougoed
In Elevate: 600mg sceletium extract per gummy in Sceletium Gummies, and part of I AM CALM.
What is sceletium?
Sceletium is a low-growing succulent native to the Western and Northern Cape. Its natural compounds, called alkaloids (the best known is mesembrine), are what researchers are most interested in.
Traditional use
The Khoi and San peoples of South Africa have used kanna for centuries, traditionally chewing the fermented plant, known as kougoed. It was used to ease tiredness and lift the mood during long journeys and gatherings.
What research is looking at
Modern studies, many of them in South Africa, have looked at standardised sceletium extracts and everyday mood, stress and focus. Early human trials are encouraging, and research is continuing.
How to take it
Take 1 gummy daily, ideally in the morning or early afternoon.
Who should check first
Do not take sceletium with antidepressants (including SSRIs and MAOIs) or other mood medication. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you have a heart condition or take any prescription medication, speak to your doctor first.
