What is sea moss?
Sea moss is a red seaweed that grows on rocky Atlantic coastlines. It naturally contains minerals including iodine, as well as a gel-forming fibre called carrageenan.
Traditional use
Sea moss has been eaten in Ireland and the Caribbean for generations, cooked into puddings, drinks and broths as an everyday nourishing food.
What research is looking at
Research on sea moss itself is limited. Scientists are interested in its minerals and its fibre, including how seaweed fibres interact with the gut microbiome.
