What is sea moss?

Sea moss is a type of red seaweed. The name usually refers to Chondrus crispus, known as Irish moss, which grows along the rocky Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America, or to related species such as Gracilaria from warmer waters. It has been used for generations in Irish and Caribbean kitchens, often to thicken drinks and desserts.

What’s in it?

Like other seaweeds, sea moss naturally contains minerals including iodine, iron, calcium and magnesium, as well as soluble fibre. Iodine is a mineral that contributes to normal thyroid function.

A note on iodine

The iodine content of seaweed varies a lot depending on where and how it’s grown. Your body needs iodine, but too much can affect the thyroid. That’s why it’s sensible to stick to the recommended serving and avoid stacking several iodine-rich products together. If you have a thyroid condition, speak to your doctor before taking sea moss.
